Habitat helps over 81,000 low-income families in 2011

Habitat for Humanity has surpassed its 2010 record by helping 81,399 families into safe, decent and affordable homes during the fiscal year ended 30th June 2011. Habitat served 74,960 families in the previous fiscal year. Habitat also helped more than 6,000 families establish legal rights to a house or land and provided more than 157,000 individuals with technical assistance including legal help, training in financial literacy, and construction-related advice and training. Get a snapshot of Habitat’s work around the world in the latest annual report (3 MB). The Asia-Pacific region was responsible for more than one quarter of the 81,399 figure; in the past financial year alone, Habitat assisted 22,600 families to build, rehabilitate or repair their houses in the region.

Home for Christmas

In the Asia-Pacific region and around the world, Habitat for Humanity is proud to celebrate with families who deserve a decent place to live.

Korea: Habitat for Humanity Korea celebrated the 2,000th house the organization has built in a dedication ceremony earlier this month. The Seo family, who will be living in the 2,000th house, are based in Yangpyong, Gyeonggi province, about an hour’s ride east of Seoul. After his small business folded in 2009, Myeongkwan Seo, 34, could not afford to rent anymore and lived with a friend while his wife and two young children stayed with a relative. The Seo family can look to a new life together in a decent house. Habitat started in South Korea nearly two decades ago and dedicated its 1,000th house in Paju, Gyeonggi in 2008.

New Zealand: Habitat for Humanity New Zealand yesterday dedicated what is believed to be the first Habitat house to be built inside a prison. The four-bedroom house was lifted by sections over the fence of the prison last month and transported to Hastings city. Habitat volunteers worked with the Hungahunga family in painting, cladding, lining, fencing and landscaping. The family of five will be moving their furniture into their new home before the weekend. Sharne Hungahunga said: “The house looks wonderful. We just can’t wait to move in and spend our first Christmas in our new home.” One of the prison inmates who helped to build the house concluded that “this experience has been awesome”. The Hungahungas’ house is the eleventh built by the Habitat for Humanity Central North Island affiliate.

US$2.3 million EU grant for Fiji
The European Union has agreed to provide Habitat for Humanity Fiji with US$2.3 million in funding over a three-year period. The funds will allow HFH Fiji to focus more of its assistance on Indo-Fijian families, as well as lower income families in western Viti Levu, and on Vanua Levu. The project will cover new homes, renovations, hurricane proofing existing structures, improvements to community evacuation centers and community water projects.

Funding boost for Japan earthquake response

Habitat for Humanity Japan has received approval of a grant from Japan Platform to rehabilitate up to 100 houses in earthquake-affected Ofunato city in Iwate prefecture. The 54-million-yen (US$672,000) funding will also provide housing-related consultations for up to 2,000 households in the same area. Japan Platform is an international emergency humanitarian aid organization made up of a consortium of 32 Japanese NGOs, the business community, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. To date, Habitat has repaired 54 houses for survivors of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami which hit the northeastern coast of the country. In November, Habitat volunteers distributed 278 mattress sets with bedding to survivors living in 144 temporary shelters. The distribution took place in Onagawa, Miyagi prefecture, one of the worst-affected areas. Momoko Kimura, 83, watched Habitat volunteers at work and said: “I am very grateful to all the volunteers who helped me get my life back. I am so moved by these young students who are spending their precious time to get the temporary shelters ready for us.”

Flood response in the Asia-Pacific region
Habitat for Humanity continues to help flood-affected families in several Asia-Pacific countries even as the media spotlight dims. In each country, Habitat’s main response starts with distributing various types of kits. These may be shelter kits, which typically include tools and household items to repair homes, or clean-up kits to clean homes of mud and other waste carried by floodwaters. Clean-up kits contain items like chlorine powder and other disinfectants, along with brushes, brooms, gloves and buckets. Hygiene or care kits including soap and mosquito repellent may also be distributed. Efforts underway include:

Cambodia: Over yesterday and today, Habitat for Humanity Cambodia distributed the first batch of shelter repair kits and personal hygiene kits to 490 flood-affected families in Pouk and Angkor Chum districts in Siem Reap province. About 1,000 families are expected to be helped in Siem Reap and Kandal provinces.

Philippines: JP Morgan partnered with Habitat for Humanity Philippines to distribute 400 shelter repair kits to families in Baseco, a former dockyard in Metro Manila, who were affected by Typhoon Nesat (local name: Pedring). The kits contained materials such as flexiboards, galvanized iron sheets and nails. Constantino Nacua, a 49-year-old construction worker, was among families who received help. He said: “When the typhoon struck us, the hard life we have doubled. Our roof was blown away. Even our walls fell to the ground. We tried our best to make do with repairs through plastics. Thailand: Habitat for Humanity Thailand signed up 160 volunteers for its flood response through its Facebook page in November. Separately, another 3,000 people have volunteered to help in response to an advertisement on Coca-Cola Thailand’s iCoke website. The beverage company had committed to help Habitat as well as the Thai Red Cross in their flood response efforts. New partnerships with Naresuan University in Phitsanulok and the military in Lopburi provinces will boost HFH Thailand’s resources in volunteer labor, transportation and construction equipment. In Lopburi, Habitat will hold a test build to construct a house later this month.

Vietnam: Habitat is working with its partners in Dong Thap province in the south to help an initial 121 flood-affected families. HFH Vietnam will be distributing clean-up kits and shelter repair kits.

Habitat highlights financial education program at Citi-FT summit
The eighth annual Citi-FT Financial Education Summit, supported by Habitat for Humanity International, was held in Jakarta, Indonesia in early December. This international conference attracted over 250 delegates with topics such as the role of financial education in reducing poverty; how mass media can leverage the reach of financial education programs; and ways in which financial education interventions can be adapted for Islamic banking. Citi is a key supporter of Habitat’s financial education work globally. Since 2000, the Citi Foundation has supported Habitat with more than US$30 million in funding and grants, including a recentUS$1 million grant for microsavings in disaster-prone areas in the Asia-Pacific region, announced earlier this year. At the summit, Jennifer Oomen, housing finance manager for financial education at Habitat’s Asia-Pacific area office, spoke on the role of financial education in accessing housing in disaster-prone areas. Learn more. Separately, Citi Foundation and Habitat for Humanity co-authored a blog post “The Critical Shift Toward Asset Building”. The writers recognize an enormous opportunity in providing products that help low-income households build assets to improve their living conditions and join the financial mainstream. Read on.

“Shelter is a neglected human right”
On 10th December, when the world marked International Human Rights Day, Habitat for Humanity highlighted how the right to decent shelter could be taken for granted. “Not only does addressing the human right to shelter help realize other human rights, but it also progressively supports greater national wealth and a more robust economy – something not so easily overlooked in these uncertain economic times,” wrote Rick Hathaway, Asia-Pacific vice-president for Habitat for Humanity, in a special statement. Habitat for Humanity Philippines is the happy recipient amid a season of giving. Swiss-headquartered watchmaker Swatch Philippines recently launched a limited edition watch in aid of HFH Philippines. The Habitat Watch, in gold and silver to mark Christmas, was unveiled at a Manila mall by HFH Philippines’ ambassadors Matteo Guidicelli, Chris Tiu, and Derek Ramsay. Funds raised from the sale of the watch will benefit HFH Philippines’ Youth Build to be held in May 2012. Find out more. Separately, Toronto-based furniture company Gus* is raising funds for HFH Philippines by seeking trade-in of old furniture.

HFH Australia’s Nine Dragons Build in Vietnam

About 70 volunteers from Australia built six houses together with Habitat for Humanity families during the week-long Nine Dragons Build in Long An province, southern Vietnam. Volunteer Susan Blain posted on Habitat for Humanity Australia’s Facebook page for the build. “It was the most amazing week. Feeling very emotional back in Ho Chi Minh City. So pleased to have been able to participate in this wonderful project. Have met the most amazing people. Would recommend participation in a build to everyone.” Check out photos on Facebook. Australia’s Hands and Hearts Cambodia build
After a recent recce in Cambodia, Habitat for Humanity Australia’s ambassador Angela Catterns is ready for a revisit in March 2012. The event is HFH Australia’s Hands and Hearts Cambodia build. HFH Australia organized a successful Hand In Hand Build in Nepal in March 2011 for 100 women supporters. Angela, a broadcaster and journalist, talked to Australian newspaper The Age. “You don’t need to be a skilled builder, just a willing worker. But you have to help raise the funds to pay for the house to be built – A$5,000 (US$5,070),” she said.Read more.

Habitat World launches multimedia-rich online version

The flagship magazine of Habitat for Humanity International has unveiled an all-new digital version with interactive content, photo slideshows and videos. The current issue of Habitat World looks back at family and volunteer stories from around the world over the past 35 years. Another family story from the Philippines and a volunteer story from Japan are included in the edition. Habitat World will offer three online-only issues and three print issues a year. A blessing in return

The annual tradition of the Rockefeller Center donating a milled Christmas tree to build a Habitat for Humanity home in the U.S. is celebrated in a new picture book. The 48-page book was written by David Rubel in collaboration with Habitat and illustrated by Jim LaMarche. The Carpenter’s Gift is about the story of a young boy in Depression-era New York who wishes for a decent home for his family and shares a lesson about the importance of helping our neighbors. Habitat supporters are encouraged to upload their seasonal and holiday photos to Habitat’s site. American volunteer writes book after Nepal build
Habitat for Humanity volunteers often blog and even write for the media during and after their builds. For Kay Donaldson of Indiana state in the U.S., a book was born after her January 2011 trip to Nepal. “I’ve always wanted to write a book; I just never knew what to write about,” she told local newspaper, The News-Sentinel. Jetlag kept her awake during her first night in Kathmandu; it was then that she decided she would write about her experience in Nepal. Donaldson, 52, who works in a healthcare services group, published the book herself under the title of Borrowed Time: On the Road to Nepal.

Habitat’s warm wishes for Christmas

Home has a special meaning in HFH Indonesia’s Christmas card.

Habitat for Humanity’s programs in the Asia-Pacific region are sending Christmas cards or encouraging their supporters to experience the joy of giving. See some of the cards designed by Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore. HFH Indonesia’s card quoted English novelist Charles Dickens: “Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration.” HFH Singapore is also providing a Christmas “virtual” gift catalogue. The Program Executive is responsible to provide administrative and operation assistance to Habitat programs, sending volunteer-teams to other countries and home-cleaning for the elderly poor.

Applicant should therefore enjoy working for altruistic purposes. He or she must also be willing to communicate and affirm Habitat's Christian identity and principles.

Skills required:

Able to oversee projects and programmes.
Computer-literate. (Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Access)

If you are looking for an adventure of a different kind, do consider joining our Global Village build.

The trip details are as follows:

- In-country cost: Approximately S$450
- Airfare: to be arranged together with the team

The above approximate in-country cost covers accommodation, accident and illness insurance, ground transport, most meals and water. The donation goes to Habitat Global Mission Fund. Volunteers are encouraged to fundraise for that component. The team will also need to arrange their own flights and fly in together as a team.

21 year old and above
Physical and mental fitness
Flexible and adaptable, willing to work together as a team
Preferably male as the whole team is made up of guys

Looking for Esplanade Youths volunteers to bring the joy of the Marina Bay SINGAPORE Countdown 2010/11 celebrations to those less privileged‏

The Marina Bay SINGAPORE Countdown 2010/11 is an annual event presented by Esplanade and the Urban Redevelopment Authority to mark the year's end and celebrate the beginning of a new year. This contemplative event unites individuals from all walks of life through a collective expression of wishes for the year ahead.

Throughout December, a total of 20,000 wishing spheres, all marked with hand-written wishes of the community, will be released into the waters of Marina Bay - the Bay of Hope and Light. Each wishing sphere represents a hope, a belief that the New Year will bring new possibilities and a brighter tomorrow.

As part of our community engagement efforts, we will be bringing the wishing spheres down to various elderly and children homes and centres so that their beneficiaries can pen down their wishes, hopes and dreams. We are looking for Esplanade Youths (that's you!) to help us when we make our visits.

Below are the dates, times and names of the organisations that we'll be visiting. Depending on your availability, you may sign up for either one or more (or all!) sessions.

Established since 1988, the RED CROSS HOME FOR THE DISABLED (RCHD) has been providing long term residential and respite care to individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities. Our residents are between the age of 9 to 60 years, mostly suffering from multiple disabilities, such as Down’s Syndrome, cerebral palsy, spastic quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy and other severe physical deformities.

Our Caregivers
A team of dedicated staff provides for the daily needs of the residents at the Home.
They are:

Nurses, Nursing Aides and Healthcare Aides
Physiotherapist and Therapy Aides provide physiotherapy for the residents to help improve their mobility through spinal peripheral joint mobilisation and manipulation
Speech Therapist helps to enhance the speech and swallowing ability of the residents
Nurse Educator identify learning and training needs of the staff, and coordinates and organises training activities to strengthen clinical practices

Regular volunteers also commit their time and talents to bring joy to the residents. They provide haircutting services, organise parties, as well as engage in other befriending activities with the residents.

Our Activities

Outings and Excursions
Volunteers take time to befriend our residents and organise social and recreational activities.
Residents who are more mobile have been brought to visit the zoo and other places of interest.

Art and Crafts
Some of our residents are talented artist in their own abilities. During Art and Craft sessions, these talented artists produce wonderful artworks that are used as cards and gifts for both corporate organisations and individuals.

Parties and Entertainment
Throughout the year, volunteers from organisations, civic groups and other organisations organise parties and provide entertainment programmes for the residents. The residents are always delighted to celebrate festive seasons and special days, receiving presents and enjoying much fun and laughter.

Eu4ria Inc, will be embarking on a mega project that is one of a kind. We'd be organizing a 5 team expedition to Sihanoukville, Cambodia. It is otherwise, endearingly called Snooky.

Summary

In Sikhanoukville, Cambodia, 50-60 families have been living in makeshifts tent provided by various NGOs for five years ever since they were evicted by the government to make way for tourism activities. Due to lack of resources, relief efforts are insufficient and impeded.

To put it simply, the main objective of this project is to build a self-sustainable village for families in Sikhanoukville or Snooky as the locals call it.

Proposal

Build a highly sustainable model village that could solve housing problems in Sikhanoukville.
The Model village has to meet these requirements:
Possess
1. a Water supply system
2. an Electric power unit
3. a communal and clean Toilets
4. the ability to generate income on its own
5. the ability to train and develop villagers with new skills

I'm sure you would want to know how this expedition works so, below are the frequently asked questions.

How many volunteers are needed?

As it is a large scale project, with various stages, a team is not enough. Therefore, this expedition tentatively consists of FIVE teams with TWENTY members each, which means a total of 100 members are needed.

Do we need to fork out our own money?

We will try our utmost best to raise as much funds as possible through sponsorships and fund-raisings so that we will have to fork out a minimal sum. One of our major potential fund-provider is Youth Expedition Project, YEP (a program under National Youth Council that you might have heard of).

Are we doing this project from scratch?

Yes, we will be doing it from scratch. It is just like any other community involvement project with the logistics, programmes etc. However, we do have help from companies with specialised skills as well as our peers who've had gone for similar expeditions to help us in this effort. This humanitarian expedition will be structured similar to the YEP.

How long will we be there?

This project will be done in stages. As we have a total of FIVE teams, all the groups will go at different times/stages ie. overlapping weeks, for eg. Team 1 will go on the first and second week. Team 2 will go on the second and third week. This is the tentative idea of how the teams will be despatched. so we're anticipating 4-8 weeks for the completion of all the stages.

Why should I go?

Firstly, YOU CAN DO IT and you've been wanting to do it since forever! (: Secondly, this is the chance to do what you can never do from just being here in Singapore. Thirdly, this project is a first of it's kind. And if it's successful, there will be more of such start-ups of villages in many other third world countries. And when it's a success, we know deep in our heart that we were once part of the team that made it happen =)

Fret not! Neither have we! (at least most of us). remember, theres always a first time to everything! annnndd, at the risk of sounding cliche, "Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic." (: this is a fantastic opportunity to push our limits and realize our potentials.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project

The Youth Alliance is a vibrant society where youths are equipped, enriched and touched to in turn reach out to equip, enrich and touch others.

TYA is the youngest club amongst all community service CCAs in Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

The committee of The Youth Alliance firmly believes in the potential of the youths of today. We work around our motto of, “Equipping lives, enriching minds, touching hearts.” Ghandi once said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” The Youth Alliance hopes to spread this message to the youths of Singapore. Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “We cannot prepare the future for our youths, but we can prepare our youths for the future.” The youths of today will be the future of Singapore. What we make out of them, will determine what they will make out of the future, and The Youth Alliance hopes to contribute to the future of our nation through inspiring the youths today.

With a current membership of about 175 Ngee Ann Polytechnic students, TYA serves as a nucleus to congregate young people from Secondary Schools in Singapore and provide opportunities for them in three fundamental areas:

1. Development
The Youth Alliance supports the youth in Singapore, by providing them with information, advice and a wide range of community projects, we organize camps and courses to help the youths of today bond and socialize, undergo leadership training, character development and provide opportunities to upgrade themselves.

2. Opportunity
We work directly with young people from various Secondary Schools to create new opportunities, innovating and delivering projects in partnership with community service/youth clubs at our outstanding outdoor activity and training facilities. We also serve as mentors to secondary school students who have community service projects they want to carry out.

3. Voice
The Youth Alliance advocates on behalf of our members, so that the daily experience of on-the-ground practitioners informs the thinking of our nation’s leaders, policy makers and other community stake holders.

With many upcoming camps and events, The Youth Alliance is excited to see much advancement in this relatively young CCA. We hope to bring the joy of helping others to the youths of Singapore. Quoting Aesop, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” The daring spirit in youths can be put to good use. What they need is an example, and example has more followers than reason. TYA intends to be that example and going beyond that, we intend to not only be the example but provide opportunities for youths to follow the example.

The Indian Cultural Society of Ngee Ann Polytechnic has come forward to initiate a charity project called Nigel And Friends to raise fund for Spastic Children Association of Singapore (SCAS) and also to create awareness to the participants and the supporters of the need for charity. One of the ways to raise fund would be the Island Wide Donation Drive.

As such I would like to humbly ask support from you and the members of the clubs and societies in terms of manpower. We need 200 people to help us out in this project so that we can collect an amount of $10,000 through this Island Wide Donation Drive Day.

If you can help us by getting at least 5-10 members from you respective clubs and societies to help us out in this project to go out and collect money through tin collection together with us, we will be really greatful.

About the Project

Art of Love, is a community-based project aimed at creating awareness amongst the public on patients with Cerebral Palsy. This is done by getting students from the Spastic Children’s Association to make hand prints on ceramic tiles which would then be pieced together to form a mural.

At the same time, we would also attempt to get the event registered in the Singapore Book of Records for the largest number of artwork done by these children.

Getting a place in the Singapore Book of records would definitely create more awareness and attention on the condition of Cerebral Palsy at the same time, not forgetting the possibility of getting more donations and help for the Spastic Children’s' Association.

Students from the Ngee Ann Family are involved in this project, including Ngee Ann Primary School, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic students. The Ngee Ann Primary School students would be involved in the operations of the event while Ngee Ann Polytechnic would be the main organiser.

Why Cerebral Palsy?

We feel that this condition has very low awareness by the public and hence, we feel the need to let more people know about this medical condition. Hopefully, it will increase the number of volunteers in the Spastic Children’s Association. Not only that, it helps to raise the self-esteem of children who suffer from this condition as their simple artwork can form a wall mural that looks very eye pleasing.

CONGRATULATIONS! BA CARES :] *from PSTF Committee*

TEN TONS!!!

6 students + 1 lecturer + 2500 volunteers=TEN TONS!! On the 14th of July 2007, 2500 volunteers combed the island to collect old newspapers and clothing to raise funds for 12 Voluntary Welfare Organizations (VWOs).

It all began with 6 “BA CARES” soon-to-be-graduate members brainstorming for a last project that they could do to serve society.

Newspaper collection was not new. They had planned and organized such collections before. But TEN TONS was going to be the LARGEST collection ever.

With the full support of School of Business and Accountancy (BA) lecturer Mr Ben Tan, these 6 students brought together all the Schools in Ngee Ann Polytechnic and some 20 secondary schools to pull off this record-breaking collaborative event with the National Environmental Agency (NEA).

As a consequence of their efforts, about 2500 volunteers gathered early in the morning at their respective areas all over the island - Central (Bishan, Ang Mo Kio, Serangoon & Toa Payoh), East (Pasir Ris & Bedok), West (Jurong East, Jurong West, Bukit Batok) and North (Woodlands, Yishun, Sembawang, Admiralty).

They then ventured out in the sweltering heat as Environmental Ambassadors, knocking from door-to-door to collect old newspapers and clothes. Residents were very supportive with their contributions.

Piles of newspapers and bagfuls of old clothing could be seen at each collection point.
TEN TONS was featured on Channel 8 News on the night of the collection, and 2 organising committee members, Joanne and Qiong Ping, were interviewed in a Chinese TV Talk show “Good Morning Singapore” on the 24th of July 2007.

With the support of its volunteers, TEN TONS managed to collect 101 tons of newspapers and 8 tons of clothing in a single day, earning the event a place in the Singapore Book of Records for the highest tonnage of such materials ever collected in a single day. To date TEN TONS has raised about $29,000 to be donated to the VWOs.

TEN TONS would like to thank all volunteers, secondary schools, lecturers, directors and the Principal of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Mr Chia Mia Chiang, for supporting them in this worthy cause.

On behalf of the SCS Council and the 6 beneficiaries of the SCS Great Singapore Duck Race 2007, I would like to thank you guys for your leadership in driving this fund-raising in our NP campus. All in all, we raised a total of S$6,745 for the beneficiaries through the NP-ICT SCS Student Chapter (some assistance from the ICT Student Counil and Passion Synergy Taskforce), helmed by your leadership.

There is an overseas community service project this coming holiday after your final exams!

Myanmar Project 2007

Cost: $550 (after subsidy) / $1100 (no subsidy)

Programme Highlights
Will be visiting three Day-Care Centres, painting a wall mural, getting wooden floor tiling, lessons for the children, and many more activities that would be a unique experience!

Leo Club is having their annual Wealth of Love 2007 event with a very different focus this time

- environmental focus: Collection of Recyclable Items

Event Day: 1 July 2007 Sunday

Time: 9am to 5pm

Meeting Time: 830 am

Areas: Toa Payoh District (refer to poster)

Collection Items: newspaper, clothes, toys etc from residents

Funds raised will go to Moral Home for the Disabled to fortify the effort in meaningful cause.

CCA points, lunch and beverage will be provided. There will be a prize for the Club with the most number of members who turned up. (Individual sign ups not included).

BA CARES is having a upcoming activity that needs a lot of your help!

Garangunee collection has always been BA Cares forte and they would like to capitalize on their experience to aim for a more ambitious target – TEN TONS -an island wide newspaper collection while creating a Guinness World Record.

Event Day: 14 July 2007 Saturday
Time: 9am to 1.30pm
Meeting Time: 830 am
Areas: All over Singapore, register to choose your favourite destination (refer to poster)
Collection Items: newspaper, used electronic goods and clothes from residents and corporations.

The extensiveness of this project would require many volunteers who we hope to recruit from NP, secondary schools and other keen organizations. Funds raised will go to selected Voluntary Welfare Organizations to fortify their efforts in various meaningful causes.

With this project, the aims are:
Do our part for the environment
Inspire the public to do their bit for the environment
Engage youths in community involvement
Support the various efforts of VWOs
Encourage volunteerism
Create the Guinness World Record
Develop the potential of future leaders in entrepreneurship
Character building skills for students participation
Enrich ourselves in various skills such as volunteer management

Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2007

The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon is here again!

Being its sixth year, more runners are taking the opportunity to be part of the big race.

As looking forward to 38,000 this year, the Standard Chartered Marathon is recruiting some 2,600 volunteers to help out during Race Day on 02 December 2007, as well assupport staff at the Marathon Expo held before the event.

For the past five years, volunteers played a big part in this event, and the race would not have been a huge success without them.Volunteers can look forward to an array of positions to choose from (such as Marathon Expo, Marshals, Drinks Station Staffs, and many others),volunteer benefits and ultimately, the fun enriching experience that comes along with it!

Christian Outreach to the Handicapped (COH) will be holding their Flag Day fund raising event.

With a great reputation of contributing to the community, Ngee Ann Poly would like to lend a helping hand in this project. This mass event will need an estimated number of 1,000 student volunteers to raise a targeted amount of $70,000.

Have you ever assumed how an ex-offender would look like?

We probably would have, wouldn’t we?

Have you ever wondered who you are sitting next to at the bus-stop, at the food centre, or in a movie theatre?

We probably wouldn’t, would we?

A group of five youths did not just wondered about it.

(Photo: from left to right) Nadiah Kamsir (WIL Alumni, BIT graduate of 2005), Nicholas Goh (Nanyang Polytechnic Final-Year student), Isaiah Das (NUS Final-Year Honours student), Mazuin Khamis (BA CARES Alumni, BS graduate of 2004), and Gladys Wong (BA CARES Alumni, BS graduate of 2005), have come together to write the book, ‘Unwritten’.

Their book chronicles the trials and tribulations of the some of those who have served time for crimes such as rioting, theft, underage sex and drug use.

Would you want to read about it? We hope you would.

Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Andrew & Grace Home for troubled female teens and Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Student Aid Fund. It will be officially launched on 25th November 2006 in conjunction with a 100km run to raise funds for the home. The paperback version will be sold for $10 each and the hardback for a minimum donation of $100. Orders can be placed by e-mailing to unwritten.stories@gmail.com.

1.Providing manpower/volunteers for the event publicity in Bt Panjang Hosing Estate- 25 November 2006

2.Providing Manpower/volunteers in the collection of food items in Bt Panjang Housing Estate- 2 December 2006 (lunch will be provided)

3. Providing Manpower/volunteers in the delivery of food items to 1 rm flat around Singapore - 3 December 2006

4. Donation of food items 20 Nov to 24 Nov 2006 @ the Atrium from 10 am to 5 pm (there is also a booth selling food items for donation)

CCA POINTS will be awarded.

Background info

The BB SGB project is unique as it challenges donors to go beyond the mere giving of money; they are called to make the extra effort to buy the food items such as rice, sugar, biscuits, canned food, other daily necessities or gifts wished for, by a child from a poor family, elderly or family in our society.

SGB is an event which carries out annually to bring cheers to the less fortunate people during the Christmas seasons, by doing a house-to-house collection and will be handed directly to the less fortunate people. Before this, we need to do a house-to-house publicity as well. We hope the clubs/societies can help us by providing the manpower to help us in both areas of external publicity as well as the house-to-house collection. Our target is to have 300 volunteers to join us for this magnificent and meaningful event. We promise to provide the best welfare for the volunteers.

About Ngee Ann Polytechnic Community Service Task Force

History

Ngee Ann Polytechnic Community Service Task Force was launched on 29 September 2006 at the community service camp which bring together all six different community service clubs for a common objectives.

The 6 clubs consists of
• BA Cares
• BB Primers
• BP-Mentoring
• Environmental Ranger Society
• Leo Club
• Rotaract Club

This task force was initiated by Ms Leong Cheng Yee, Simon Tan Hong Siang and Lawrence Tan Hong Chiang as they felt that there are many scattered efforts of community service works in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. By combining all the community service clubs together, we will work towards a common objective and also, reduces the unnecessary duplication of resources like manpower.

The logo with the theme “Passion Synergy” is to drive to all our members that we should be driven, passionate, focused, energized and take initiative in implement our ideals, projects, activities and trips that will “do a different in someone’s lives”.

The Ngee Ann Polytechnic Community Service Task Force “Passion Synergy” was launched during the community service clubs camp on 29 September 2006.

Currently, this group has been disbanded in the Polytechnic. This blog keeps all the memories and the projects done during the years 2006-2008
